Leifeld Metal Spinning GmbH

Leifeld Metal Spinning GmbH based in Ahlen (district Warendorf / North Rhine-Westphalia) is a global market leader in the development and manufacturing of machinery for metal flow forming and metal spinning.
The company has 110 employees and will generate revenues of 30 million euros in 2007. With an export quota of 80 per cent in the current fiscal year, Leifeld impressively demonstrated the international competitiveness of its machines. The company is free of debt and the acquisition will have no negative effect on the company’s finances in the future. In 2007, a positive cash flow in the single-digit million euro range will be achieved. In the last few years, Leifeld has shown strong growth: Revenues have almost tripled since 2004, while the number of employees has doubled since then. For 2008, Leifeld again expects a top-line growth in revenue of at least ten per cent.
The management of Leifeld Metal Spinning GmbH consists of three managing directors: Holger Hansen, Werner Hütter and Peter Piezynski.

The technology of Leifeld

Metals such as aluminum, copper, steel or titanium are formed into a hollow body with complex geometry by metal spinning technology. The machines from Leifeld are used for example in the production of wheel rims for Ferrari, the manufacture of gas tanks for natural-gas-driven cars, lamella sections for automatic transmissions, household goods, industrial tank floors or reflectors for the lighting industry.
Similar to a potter’s wheel when working with clay, Leifeld machines set into rotation a round metal disc, a tube or preform. Compressive power is exerted on the metal using forming rollers. This causes the metal to flow until the required form has been achieved. Furthermore, forming hardens the material bringing considerable savings in raw material, weight and energy.Leifeld supplies its flow forming and spinning machines throughout the world. With the exception of England, where Leifeld has a subsidiary, all global markets are served via agencies abroad. The company is a globally recognized traditional brand in the field of metal forming and associated technologies – metal spinning/shear forming, flow forming, necking-in, profiling. Over 5,000 Leifeld machines are currently used in more than 120 countries worldwide.

Company history

The company started in the Leifeld cooperage, founded in Ahlen, Germany, in 1891. Tools for the forming process have been manufactured there since the 1920s. The first metal spinning machine was developed in the 1930s. Since then, major improvements in spinning technology have been linked to the company’s name. In the 1950s, the company developed the world’s first hydraulic spinning machine. Other worldwide innovations such as the first CNC spinning machine and first playback-controlled spinning machine followed in subsequent years. In the 1990s, for the first time, 16 flow forming machines were supplied to General Motors in order to manufacture lamella sections for automatic transmissions in large series production. So far, more than 400 patent applications in the most important countries of distribution have been registered, demonstrating the sustained high innovative capability of Leifeld.
